Our History

Dr. Aaron Vinik has spent his career studying neuropathic pain. During his time as Director of the Diabetes Center at the University of Michigan and as the Director of Scientific Research at the Strelitz Diabetes Institute, Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk Virginia, Dr. Vinik has published over 400 citations in peer reviewed journals studying the effects, symptoms, origins and therapies for various neuropathies. While at EVMS he and his colleagues observed a steady increase in the number of manuscripts noting the efficacy of certain supplements in improving the biology of neuropathy. In 2003 they set out to categorize these studies and to understand more about the concentrations, bioavailability, effects and half lives of these ingredients. They noted the wide variation in the quality of the studies. Some of the manuscripts described studies that where placebo controlled, some had no controls. In addition the concentrations of the active ingredients varied from study to study. Finally, there was (and still is) a never ending stream of new research suggesting new ingredients and different concentrations. Despite these variations, the trend was clear – certain supplements in the right concentrations can promote the improvement of neuropathic symptoms.

As a treatment option for certain patients, Dr, Vinik and his EVMS colleagues began giving these supplements to patients in a consistent formulation and documenting the changes in their symptoms. The results of these studies will soon be published, but they did observe a real improvement in some symptoms. EVMS filed a patent and the physicians started recommending the individual ingredients to patients. A problem soon arose - in order to get the correct dose, patients were spending between $80 and $100 a month on various supplements. This prompted the group to commission the creation of the NutriNerve formulation. There have been slight updates to NutriNerve’s formulation, and today’s product is NutriNerve version 2.1. It will be updated again – when the research dictates accordingly. You can see the bibliography for NutriNerve here. NeuroEffex was formed to supply NutriNerve and other products to patients as recommended by physicians.
